You know, I just can't have a bio written in third person. So I'm just going to tell you my short story by my lonesome - maybe I should call this 'autobio' instead of 'bio'.
Music is a deep passion of mine, and it has been for a long time. I can remember being a four year old in kindergarten, choosing to listen to Vivaldi instead of going outside to play. I can also remember the first time I got my trumpet in third grade, and then the subsequent 10 years of orchestra practice and performance.
I can even more clearly remember the first time I picked up a guitar. I was 13. It was my sister's Yamaha acoustic, and it had been relegated to a closet for a few years. I had decided that guitar was going to make me popular in high school, and if I learned Metallica and Nirvana, people might think I was cool. The only problem was that I was also deeply involved in the chess club and the math club, so it's kind of tough to shed that image.
My first riff I ever learned on guitar was Fade To Black, by Metallica. It felt so pure and amazing the first time I was able to play along with the record. It's just one of those feelings that you can't forget.
During my years after college, I started to write my own music. I kind of broke free from exclusively listening to heavy metal, getting into all sorts of left-of-center rock music like Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, Fiona Apple, Beck, Rufus Wainwright, and Muse. I finally decided in 2005 that I needed to quit my career in tech, and go make a record.
I teamed up with San Rafael based producer Joey Muller (Savage Garden) to create 'Enemy', my first full length record. With drummer Jeff Anthony (Sheryl Crow) and bassist Dan Feiszli (Julio Iglesias) in the rhythm section, and Joey doing a lot of the keyboard work, we created a pretty kickass record. To top it off, multi-Grammy Award nominated mixing guru Mark Needham (The Killers, Chris Isaak, Cake) polished it to a shine.
The record is indeed dark, and I expose a lot of my fear, anxiety, depression, sarcasm, and some anger. It's an honest record. I think my only goal with music is to be honest and enjoy it, and perhaps get to that feeling I got when I played Metallica for the first time.
I've played many great venues in the SF Bay Area, including Red Devil Lounge, Make Out Room, Blakes, Hotel Utah, Bill Graham, 12 Galaxies. I've got a great band and I can also play solo with just an acoustic guitar. You should come out and see us; I can almost guarantee you'll enjoy it.
